AFRL - Raptor - System Maintenance

AFRL DSRC Cray XE6 RAPTOR - Dates Modified - Extended Maintenance - now beginning 11 June 2012

As part of the TI-11/12 acquisition, RAPTOR will undergo a major operating system, processor and associated memory upgrade starting 0700 EDT on 11 June 2012. RAPTOR's expected return to service will be 28 June 2012. Please plan your job and reservation resource requirements with this information in mind.

WORKSPACE:

The AFRL DSRC strongly suggests users move data from workspace to the Center-Wide File System (CWFS) prior to this upgrade. Data on workspace is volatile and is not automatically backed up.

TI-11/12 Upgrade Details:

This maintenance includes upgrading the existing 8-core 2.4 GHz AMD Magny Cours processors to 16-core 2.5 GHz AMD Interlagos processors with 2 GB memory per core. The number of nodes will remain at 2,732, but each node will consist of 32 cores versus the current 16. This will take RAPTOR from 43,712 cores and 87 TB of memory to 87,424 cores and 174 TB of memory.

Future RAPTOR Plans:

RAPTOR will operate, at the AFRL DSRC, in this upgraded mode until 1 October 2012, pending its move to ERDC. As part of TI 11/12, RAPTOR will be integrated with the upgraded Garnet and Chugach systems. Storage for the integrated system will then be upgraded to about twice the existing capacity.

ERDC - Garnet - System Maintenance

The ERDC DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) will be upgrading Garnet as part of the TI-11/12 acquisition plan. Garnet will start this upgrade process on June 28 at 0800 hours, Central Time. This extended upgrade outage is expected to last 18 days, with a planned return to service on July 16 at 1600 hours. This part of the TI-11/12 plan will upgrade the compute nodes on Garnet to 16 core AMD Interlagos (2.5 GHz) processors. Garnet will then double in the number of cores and memory on its compute nodes. Garnet's operating system will also be upgraded to CLE 4.0 (Cray Linux Environment).

During this 18 day period users will not have access to any of their files on Garnet and should copy all critical files to the Center Wide File System ($CENTER) before the start of this extended outage. It is also recommend that users archive all files that require long term archival storage before this extended outage. The users home and work directories will not be scrubbed during this outage. But it is always prudent for users to keep a backup copy of their files and data that cannot be recreated within a reasonable amount of time or effort.

More details will be provided as they become available.

NAVY - Utility Server - System Maintenance

Navy DSRC Preventive Maintenance for the Utility Server and CWFS (Center Wide File System) is scheduled for Monday, 9 July 2012 from 0900 CT to 1100 CT.

ORS - All Systems - System Maintenance

Major hardware and software upgrade: (1) Job submissions to the Chugach queues will be halted at 1700 CDT on 12 July. (2) Chugach will have an upgrade to its CPUs and memory. (3) The operating system will have a major version upgrade. Codes may be able to run as-is on the new OS, but Cray recommends recompilation. (4) The Open Research network and domain will be changed from ARSC.EDU to ORS.HPC.MIL. This will affect how users authenticate and login. Instructions for login to the new domain will be issued and krb5.conf files will need to be updated. (5) The ORS utility server Akutil and the ORS storage server Wiseman will be physically moved to another building requiring those systems to be taken offline as well. During this outage, users' files on all ORS systems will be unavailable. Files in $HOME and $WORKDIR will be preserved, however, we always recommend that users archive valuable files stored in $WORKDIR since that filesystem is not backed up. Any files needed during the outage will need to be copied to another location before the shutdown on 15 July. [Tweaked start/end times 18 June 2012. Status on 7/30/2012 - Current end time is expected on July 31, 2012, morning.]

ERDC - Diamond - System and Network Maintenance

REMINDER:

The ERDC DoD Supercomputing Resource Center (DSRC) will conduct a Scheduled Timeout (STO) on March 2, 2013 beginning at 0800 hours, Central Time.

CHANGE:

The modifications to the ERDC DSRC infrastructure have been postponed, but routine maintenance on Diamond and the ERDC DSRC network will be performed with reduced downtime.

Diamond (SGI Altix Ice) will be taken down at 0800 hours, Saturday, March 2, for up to 8 hours (1600 hours). By the start time of the STO all file transfers must be completed and no batch jobs will be allowed to run into the STO.

The ERDC DSRC network will be down starting at 0900 hours, Saturday, March 2 for up to 4 hours. This will prevent the access to the ERDC Archive Server (Gold), Utility Server (US) and the Center Wide File System during this network outage.

03.02.13

03.07.13

AFRL - Utility Server - System Maintenance

The AFRL DSRC Utility Server will be unavailable on Thursday, 7 March due to system maintenance lasting for approximately an hour.

NAVY - All Systems - Network Maintenance

Navy DSRC Preventive Maintenance (PM) for the Unclassified Navy DSRC Juniper Firewall is scheduled for Tuesday, 12 March 2013 from 0500 CT to 0700 CT.

The primary focus of this PM is to upgrade the Juniper JUNOS firmware level. Network connectivity to DREN (Internet), external data transfers, and web access will be unavailable. PBS batch jobs on the IBM iDataPlex HPC Clusters HAISE and KILRAIN, as well as any data transfers to the CWFS or NEWTON, will not be affected.

03.17.13

ERDC - Archive - System Maintenance

The Archive Server (Gold) will not return to service at 0800 Friday March 22 due to hardware failures. At this time there is no estimate of when Gold will return to service.

**************************************************

The Archive Server (Gold) will have an extended outage while it is being moved to another location within the ERDC DSRC in order to increase its storage capacity. Users must complete all file transfers to and from the archive server by midnight on Saturday, March 16. The relocation of the archive server and tape library are expected to take more than 5 days. The estimated time of return to service is Friday, March 22 at 0800 hours, Central Time.

There will be no loss of data. Users needing access to files during this period of service interruption that have already been archived on Gold should copy the needed files from Gold to Diamond, Garnet, Copper or the Center Wide File System prior to midnight Saturday. The normal 30-day purge cycle on Diamond and Garnet will be suspended during this outage. Please be more proactive in deleting any temporary or unnecessary files in $WORKDIR on Diamond and Garnet to help prevent the scratch files systems from filling up during the service interruption.

NAVY - Kilrain - System Maintenance

Navy DSRC Preventive Maintenance (PM) for the IBM iDataPlex system, KILRAIN, is scheduled for Tuesday, 19 March 2013, from 1200 CT to 1900 CT.

The focus of this maintenance is general system administrative activities that cannot be performed during normal Production usage. The main change will be enabling GPFS file system quotas. Users will be limited to 20 TB of disk storage under their $WORKDIR directory and 10 GB of disk storage under their $HOME directory. Users can use the BCT-mandated show_storage command to list usage and quota information in KB units. Additional Infiniband Fabric performance tuning changes will also be enabled.

It is recommended that users clean up their directories in both filesystems (/u/home and /scr) to a value below these anticipated quota limits prior to this PM. Following the PM, users over their quota will be unable to write files to their directories. Due to the filesystem scrubber being enabled as well, older data will be scrubbed from /scr first. Any data users would like to retain should be moved to external storage space or archived to NEWTON. Given the current level of /scr filesystem usage, about 40%, files accessed beyond 21 days will be scrubbed first. To see files in $WORKDIR older than 21 days, users may run:

/usr/bin/find $WORKDIR -atime +21 -mtime +21 -type f -print
